A Note To People Here for the Fic
It occurs to me that the fic index should be a sticky post -- this isn't solely a fanfic community, but the fic is something we love and the index is starting to slip down the page. I'm not making it a sticky post, because it might screw up people's friends pages; instead, I'm putting a link to it here and making that a sticky post. So, here it is:

Damn Near All the Histories Fic on the Web

As always, if you know of some fic that's out there and not in the index, let me know and I'll add it, or if your fic is in the index and you don't want it there, let me know that as well, and I'll take it out.

HISTORIES FICATHON MADNESS, THAT IS.

Below are the unwritten prompts from Histories Ficathon IX, which I'll leave open until the anon period is over (so, roughly a week from Saturday). If you're writing one and didn't sign up for the ficathon originally, drop me an email or a PM so I can add you to the collection members.

If you DID sign up for the ficathon, do be advised that clicking the cut below is basically shaking the presents; you can figure out which prompt your writer chose by process of elimination. This may be a feature and not a bug. ;)

THE PROMPTSCollapse )

If anyone is panicking about the deadline approaching on Saturday, PANIC NO MORE. Because I've moved the deadline to NEXT Saturday, AUGUST 27, at 11:59 PM CENTRAL.

Also, I actually remembered to OPEN the collection, so if you have finished your fic and not posted it, you can post it now. Or revise it again! Because you have time!

I've added everyone who signed up to the appropriate collection on AO3, so you can post your fic as soon as it's done.

ANNOUNCING THE NINTH ANNUAL thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

Because Livejournal may have slowed down, but we haven't.

A few clarifications and ground rules:

1. "Histories," for ficathon purposes, means "stuff categorized as histories in the 1623 Folio". Which means the two tetralogies: Richard II/Henry IV/Henry V and Henry VI/Richard III, plus King John and Henry VIII.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:

a) Please be advised that Macbeth, King Lear, and Cymbeline are ineligible for this ficathon, as are the Roman histories.

b) The Merry Wives of Windsor is attached closely enough to the second tetralogy that if you want fic about it, that's fine. (I don't think anyone has ever asked for fic about it.)

c) The almost-certainly-partly-Shakespearean Edward III and Sir Thomas More have enough claim to being Shakespeare that they count (if anyone wants fic about them).

d) Crossovers with other early modern texts are permissible, but not other crossovers (for instance, with media properties such as Doctor Who or Harry Potter -- I'd happily read either one, but please don't request or submit them for the ficathon). Incorporating historical knowledge of the play's time period or historical backstory on the characters is perfectly valid (indeed, encouraged) and does not make the fic a crossover.

e) Requests for radical AUs (i.e. AUs set in completely different time periods and/or locations) are, as always, also permissible (and really, if you have ever done this ficathon you probably know that this fandom LOVES them).

f) Early modern history plays by other authors that engage with the same events/characters as Shakespeare's histories are also permitted (although in the entire history of the ficathon there has never been such a request in a non-crossover context). Although you probably won't need it if you have a request in mind, there is a comprehensive list of known early modern history plays here, arranged chronologically by content.

g) We anticipate that interest in this ficathon may well be increased by recent high-profile productions of history plays, including the new season of The Hollow Crown and the RSC's King and Country cycle. Fics inspired by or based on these productions are welcome! Please remember, though, that not all participants have access to them; you are therefore welcome to include optional details based on any of these productions in your request, but be aware that your writer may or may not be able to accommodate them.

h) While fic based on specific productions is permissible, do not request actor RPF based on contemporary productions. If you want fic about, e.g., Richard Burbage playing Richard III, that would be fine, but don't include RPF prompts about living people.

TL;DR: If you're not clear whether something is acceptable, please ask! However, all signups MUST include at least one prompt from one of the two tetralogies (Richard II, 1 & 2 Henry IV and Henry V OR 1, 2, & 3 Henry VI and Richard III) in order to facilitate matchups.

2. While rule #1 permits requests for AU fic, we'd like to ask participants not to request fic in pre-existing AUs. Fic taking place in pre-existing AUs may be written for Histories Ficathon Madness, but not for the main ficathon. If you wish to write in an AU not your own, please contact the mods so that we can ask the original creator(s)!

3. As always, this is a fic exchange. Assignments will go out as soon after the deadline as possible, once lareinenoire and I have had a chance to look over the entries.

4. We're open to pretty much whatever genre or pairing configuration -- gen, het, slash, femslash, giant hilarious orgies, whatever, so feel free to request whatever you like.

5. All ficathon administrative posts will appear here at thisengland and will be mirrored at @shredsandpatches on tumblr. Tumblr posts will be tagged with #historiesficathon2016; those reading this post on tumblr may wish to track that tag.

6. Word limit for fics is 1000 minimum, as in yuletide. All stories posted for the ficathon must be FINISHED STORIES with a beginning, middle, and end. Posting an incomplete story, even one that fulfills the word limit, will be grounds for banning.

7. Ficathon fics will be hosted at the Archive Of Our Own. I have created a collection for this year's Histories Ficathon entries; once assignments have gone out, I will give all participants access to it and link it on thisengland. Links to all fics will be posted on thisengland as well.

To sign up:

Fill out THIS FORM by SUNDAY, JUNE 19 at 11:59 pm CDT (go here to see what that is in your time zone). The final deadline for fics is tentatively set on AUGUST 20 at NOON CDT. (This is negotiable if it's a bad time for participants.) Once everyone's assignments are in, we will post all unwritten prompts at thisengland for anyone to write fic of any length (even if you weren't originally part of the exchange) and open the collection to all comers -- much like Yuletide Madness, in other words. All fics will then be made available on AUGUST 27. Authors will be revealed on SEPTEMBER 3.

Dear all,

We're still waiting on a couple of pinch-hits, so the archive for the 2015 Histories Ficathon and Lovefest will be opening on FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 4. There is a good chance that we might be able to open it a day early, as all the writers have checked in and assured us that things are in order, just not quite ready yet, but we hope you'll bear with us so we can make sure that everybody has a completed story waiting for them.

Thanks again to everyone for participating and to all the writers who have submitted their fics so far! This also means that you have another day or two to make any last-minute edits to your stories before the archive opens.

Yuletide nominations this year last from 22-29 September, so it seemed like a good idea to put together a quick brainstorming post to make sure we get all the plays and characters nominated that we want. Last year Richard III wasn't offered at all as a fandom and that is just sad.

This year we get three fandom nominations each with up to four characters per fandom.

A few questions occur to me--

1. Do we want to ask for the Henry IVs and Henry VIs as separate plays or together?

2. Hollow Crown listed as a separate fandom altogether, as it was last year, Y/N?

Thoughts? Plots you have laid?

26th-Aug-2014 01:30 pm - HISTORIES FICATHON MADNESS 2014
Margaret/Suffolk
The deadline is passed, and we've heard from anyone who needs extensions, so it's time to post the remaining prompts for Madness! :)

The way this works is pretty simple: all the unused prompts are under the LJ cut, and anyone who feels so inclined can pick one (or more) and write a fic of any length. This includes people who haven't signed up; I've temporarily set the community to "unmoderated" until the reveal on Thursday (SEE UPDATE). To post, go here, and choose "Post to Collection" from the buttons on the right.

NOTE: This will spoil you for which prompt your writer chose to fill. The archive will open on Thursday evening Saturday evening (August 30 at 8:00pm EST), so you have until then.

UPDATE: Owing to some scheduling issues, we're going to need to push back the reveal until the weekend. We hope that's okay with everyone, as this is a very small ficathon and we want to make sure that all participants receive a story. On a happier note, that does mean you have a few extra days to fill any of the prompts for Madness?

1. The 2014 Histories Ficathon AO3 collection is now open for business -- in the sense that it's existed for a while but I forgot to open access for posting. You can post to it now! I know a few people are done or close to being done, and that some people have had concerns in re: traveling back to universities and stuff, so worry no more. Except, you know, about ficathon bears and whatnot.

2. Speaking of ficathon bears, I've been swamped because of my new job, so I've decided to extend the deadline for the ficathon! The new deadline is MONDAY AUGUST 25 at MIDNIGHT CDT (that's midnight at the end of Monday, not at the beginning of it, so you also have all of Monday to finish). Ficathon Madness prompts will go up the following Tuesday at this community, and fics will be revealed on the evening of THURSDAY AUGUST 28 (it's evening because I have school that day). So there you go, you all have an extra weekend to finish. Good luck, and I can't wait to see what you come up with!

ANNOUNCING THE SEVENTH ANNUAL thisengland HISTORIES FICATHON AND LOVEFEST

You know, this ficathon originally got started in honor of the previous RSC history cycle (2007-08). The wheel is come full circle; I am here.

Last year, we started posting the fics at the Archive of Our Own, and this made life so much easier that we're going to do it again this year. Signups will still be done as in the past -- we thought about doing them on AO3 but I couldn't make heads or tails of the setup even with a tutorial, and this is still a small enough ficathon that it should be manageable -- but when it comes time to post your fics, you can do it yourself. This should make everyone's lives a little bit easier. All administrative business will take place here, and links to ficathon fics will still be posted to this community, so we're not going anywhere!

Administrative things, how to sign up, rules, &c.Collapse )

To sign up:

Email all of this info to me at strangebrooch AT gmail DOT com, AND lareinenoire at lareinenoire AT gmail DOT com, by WEDNESDAY JUNE 18. Don't forget to include your handle if it's not clear from your email and/or I don't know who you are. The final deadline for fics is tentatively set at THURSDAY AUGUST 21. 27th-Aug-2013 07:28 pm - well, we've finally done it
i am excited for party times
The original histories fic index has gotten so big that when I tried to update it just now, the post was TOO BIG.

So here's part 2. It works the same way as the original one and contains everything posted after January of 2013. It's linked to the original post so that people coming in through the sticky can find it.

Posts marked with an asterisk (*) are friends-locked. If the authors want me to take them out of the index, I will do so. Posts marked with a plus sign (+) are drabbles. With fics that take place during more than one play, or that take place during one play but have more bearing on another one, I have used my discretion, but generally cross-reference.

As of 2013 there is also an index for historical RPF featuring characters involved in the history plays. Fics dealing with this set of people and time period not attached to other media will be included in the index; fics specifically attached to other media properties (e.g. The White Queen or The Tudors) will not.
